Doll and teddybear making used to be a thriving art in Switzerland. Men made the porcelain faces and their wives looked after the children, the household and sewed the clothes for the dolls. “Times were tough in the 19th century which is the reason why rarely a doll smiled,” explains Meinrad Röösli of Meinrad’s Puppen und Teddybären when I visit with him in his quaint workshop on the Klusstrasse in Zürich.
